The International Symposium on Bioinformatics (InSyB) bridges the gap between InCoB (International Conference on Bioinformatics) and irregular local APBioNet-supported workshops or training courses. The one or two day annual InSyB is expected to be centred on topics relevant to the local organizer. A mix of keynotes, short talks, discussions, poster sessions, and “meet the expert” opportunities shall foster an interactive environment for integrated bioinformatics research and education.
The first InSyB was held at Universitas YARSI in Jakarta, Indonesia from August 22-24, 2017. In line with YARSI’s medical focus the topic of InSyB covers Bioinformatics for Precision Medicine including a session on High-performance computing and big data analysis. The inauguration of InSyB in Jakarta marked the efforts of the increasingly active Indonesian bioinformatics community who established in May 2016 the Indonesian Society for Bioinformatics and Biodiversity (ISSB).
The 2018 installment of the International Symposium on Bioinformatics (InSyB) was held at Perdana University from 20-21 December. The theme of the symposium was “Advancing Bioinformatics: The Future of Life Sciences”, and was officiated by the President of APBioNet, Dr. Mohammad Asif Khan.
This particular installment witnessed several other highlights – Memorandum of Understanding between MyBioInfoNet and APBioNet; and the Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Society of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (MaSBiC).
The InSyB attracts 100 – 200 participants annually, representing the following:
- the research community
- teaching staff
- students in open, distance and e-learning
- management of educational institutions
- policy makers
- the public sector
- relevant professional and international associations
- training companies
- suppliers from the private sector
